New Jersey Center for Science, Technology and Mathematics (NJCSTM)
Probabilistic Methods (Lecture & Two Labs) – to introduce students to basic probability theories and statistics techniques, including basic probability concepts and calculations, random variables, probability distributions, statistical data & data collection, descriptive statistics, sampling distribution, inferential statistics, confidence intervals, statistical hypothesis testing, etc., with application examples in Biology, Chemistry and/or Physics. The lab portion of the course covers computer lab exercises in R, including the Bernoulli process in binomial distribution; basic operations in R; binomial, Poisson and normal distribution calculations in R; Central Limit Theorem simulation in R; how to load data into R with data frames; and how to perform t-tests in R. All undergraduate NJCSTM students are required to take both the lecture and lab sections of this course. The position requires formal education in statistics and probability. Lecture - Mondays & Thursdays 2:00-3:15pm; Lab 1 - Mondays 4:30-7:15pm; Lab 2 - Fridays 3:30-6:15pm.
Mathematical & Computational Methods of Science I (Lab Only) – to teach the first part of a sequence in mathematics and computational methods which introduces calculus, scientific modeling, MATLAB programming, data structures and algorithms. The course gives an introduction to numerical differentiation and numerical solutions to systems of ordinary differential equations, with emphasis on the physical interpretation of the derivative. Laboratory activities include data fitting in Excel; root-finding methods such as bisection method and Newton’s method; finite difference methods for numerical differentiation; numerical methods for solving ordinary differential equations including Euler’s method, the midpoint method and 4th order Runge Kutta. In addition to learning programming methods, students will also learn standard numerical tools such as VenSim and MATLAB’s ODE45. 1 lab section: Wednesdays 11:00am-1:45pm.
Mathematical & Computational Methods of Science III (Lab Only) – to teach the third part of a three semester sequence. This course emphasizes application systems of linear equations, finite dimensional vector spaces, vectors, matrices, ordinary differential equations, foundations of Vector Calculus and linear transformations including the Fourier Transform. Applications include population dynamics models, harmonic analysis of audio signals and data reduction using projections onto low dimensional subspaces. The lab portion of the course emphasizes numerical techniques derived from large linear systems of equations including the principal component analysis and the Fast Fourier Transform. Spectral filtering of audio signals and data reduction using principle component analysis are addressed. 1 lab section: Tuesdays 4:30-7:15pm.
Applied Human Immunology – to teach a graduate level lecture-based course that focuses on how the human immune system works, what happens when the immune system goes awry and how different components of the immune system can be harnessed for basic and clinical research. This course explores many of the molecular and cellular players involved in immunity and the importance of their interactions. Students discuss some of the fundamental experiments in immunology and practical applications of immunological research in current biotechnology industry. 1 section: Tuesdays 7:30-10:15pm.
Advanced Molecular & Cellular Techniques – to teach the second course in a two semester sequence of graduate-level laboratory courses presenting experimental design, methods and techniques. The course explores quantitative and qualitative laboratory approaches to the study of cell signaling pathways and using loss of function genetic alteration techniques to measure effects on aspects of cell physiology. Advanced cell culture techniques including 3D spheroid and organoid culture and stem cell propagation are explored. There is additional emphasis on multiplex approaches and cell population analyses. Students are required to complete a guided research project as part of the course. 1 section: Fridays 4:30-7:15pm.
Translational Science & Medicine – to teach a graduate level course that introduces second year graduate students to the principles and methodologies of translational research through lectures, scientific readings, case study analyses and class discussions. Topics include mechanistic biology, linking clinical and basic research through evidence-based research and bioethical considerations in personalized medicine. 1 section: Wednesdays 4:30-7:15pm.
Molecular Pharmacology – to teach graduate level students the theoretical principles of Pharmacology, including pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, dosing and formulation, safety and toxicity. The course delves into the pharmacologic mechanisms of action of biologically active molecules, such as drugs, chemical mediators, hormones and toxins, the effects of these molecules on organ systems and the therapeutic uses of such molecules, routes of drug administration and metabolism, adverse reactions, contraindications, drug-drug interactions and mechanisms of drug addiction. 1 section: Mondays 7:30-10:15pm.
Biostatistics & Computational Analysis – to teach a graduate level course for Biotechnology researchers which addresses the use of standard deviation, standard error, normal distribution, significance tests and intervals, analysis of variance, linear and multiple regression, chi squared analysis, multiple comparison and data fitting procedures. 1 section: Wednesdays 4:30-7:15pm.
