Upward Bound
Kean University’s College of Natural, Applied and Health Sciences offers an intensive academic year (Saturday) session and a six week academically intensive summer residential program for its Upward Bound Program participants. Upward Bound is one of eight Federal TRiO Programs, created under Title IV of the Higher Education Act, as amended. Upward Bound is designed to identify qualified individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, prepare them for a program of post-secondary education, provide support services and motivate and prepare them for academic success. The mail goal of Upward Bound is to assist its participants in generating the skills and motivation necessary for success in education beyond secondary school.
Participant Eligibility
Eligible participants should be, at the time of initial selection into the Program, in the 9th or 10th grade attending one of the target public schools in the cities of East Orange and/or Elizabeth, New Jersey. Potential participants should be on track and enrolled in a college preparatory mathematics course. Additionally, and most importantly, potential participants must meet the Federal TRiO Programs established guidelines.
Tuition
The Kean University Upward Bound Program is sponsored in collaboration among the United States Department of Education, Kean University and Novartis Pharmaceuticals.
Location
Program activities are held on the Kean University Campus located on 1000 Morris Avenue, Union, New Jersey and in the target schools.
Schedule
The program consists of 24 Saturday sessions during the academic year (September –May) and a six week academically intensive summer residential program (June-August).
Design
The academic year as well as the summer component include courses in mathematics, science with laboratory, foreign language, English, Humanities, and services such as corporate mentoring, tutoring, SAT/ACT test preparation and financial literacy. Other services include campus visitation, workshops, cultural enrichment activities, individual and group counseling.
How to apply
Applications can be obtained by contacting the Guidance Department at the target school. Completed applications are reviewed by the Upward Bound Admissions Committee. An interview is scheduled for prospective, who must be accompanied by a parent(s)/guardian(s). Successful applicants are informed within three (3) weeks after the interview. Unsuccessful candidates are placed on a waiting list.
Accepted participants and their parent(s)/guardian(s) are expected to attend a mandatory orientation session and workshops to become abreast of Program rules, regulations, expectations and requirements along with the college application process.
