Earth Science

About

The Earth Science Program at SESS offers degrees with options in the areas of Geology, Meteorology, Earth System Science, General Earth Science, Geological Science and Society, Atmospheric Science and Society, Ocean Science and Society, Earth Science Technology and Society, and K-12 Earth Science Teaching.

Our program provides the highest quality education offering field research experiences and a wide spectrum of earth science specialty areas including geochemistry, geology and earth science technology, oceanography and marine conservation and atmospheric science. Our diverse faculty include geochemists, geographers, geologists, astronomers, atmosphere and ocean scientists who are dedicated to the academic growth of our students.

Students in the program share concerns about our global environment and an interest in how the earth behaves and are interested in the appropriate conservation and management of the earth's resources. A Kean SESS graduate will be uniquely qualified to address a diverse range of Earth Science issues facing the world today. Our graduates have been successful in exciting careers including governmental agencies, private companies, environmental consulting firms, radio and TV broadcasting, teaching and studies for advanced graduate degrees at major universities.

In addition, programs for teacher certification in earth science and elementary education with an earth science specialization are offered. Also, collateral studies in environmental and marine sciences may be elected with the Earth Science major.

GENERAL OPTION

The general earth science option provides students with a broad background in the earth sciences. This option covers the spectrum of earth science disciplines while offering students the greatest flexibility of designing their program according to their interest in the earth sciences.

GEOLOGICAL SCIENCE AND SOCIETY OPTION

This option covers the spectrum of earth science with an emphasis on the interaction between geologic processes and human beings. Students gain an excellent background across the geological specialties including field geology, structural geology, hydrology, and paleontology which qualifies them for advanced study or entry-level work.

ATMOSPHERIC SCIENCE AND SOCIETY

This option covers the spectrum of earth science with an emphasis on atmospheric processes and their interactions with human beings. Students gain an excellent background in the fundamental meteorological phenomena that control weather and climate change.

OCEAN SCIENCE AND SOCIETY

This option covers the spectrum of earth science with an emphasis on ocean and oceanic processes and their interactions with human beings. Students gain an excellent background in oceanography, marine conservation, and marine resource management. The program offers numerous field research and course opportunities that provides insight to the important interactions between the ocean, climate and man. Students are prepared for graduate study in the ocean sciences or are ready for entry-level jobs with government and non- governmental marine conservation organizations.

EARTH SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY AND SOCIETY

This option covers the spectrum of earth science with an emphasis on techniques used in the analysis of the environment. Students gain an excellent background in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, aerial photographic interpretation, field methods, and other technologies. Students are prepared for graduate study in geology or geography or are ready for entry level jobs with government or environmental agencies.
