B.A. With Theatre Teacher Certification *
Kean University offers the only undergraduate theatre teacher certification program in the state of New Jersey. Students graduating from this program pursue teaching positions with great success. Students may elect options in Early Childhood Education (P-3), Elementary Education (K-8), or Secondary Education (K-12). Courses include a wide array of practical and theoretical theatre studies as well as the necessary components and professional experiences that prepare graduates for the teaching field. Admission is by application and interview/audition/portfolio. A 3.0 GPA is required of all majors in the College of Education.

BA in Art Education*
The Art Education Program at Kean University offers a distinctive, intensive and intellectually challenging experience leading to K-12 Art Teacher Certification in New Jersey. A strong studio preparation is augmented by an academic study of the psycho-intellectual origins of artistic expression as they unfold within the growing individual. The program is reading and writing intensive and seeks serious, academically strong students who demonstrate the capacity to translate conceptual thinking into an informed, vivified and highly structured pedagogical practice.

M.A. in Fine Arts Education
Studio Option
The Master of Arts in Fine Arts Education, Studio Option is a 33 credit program designed primarily for individuals interested in advanced work and professional development in the studio arts. The degree provides an essential means for artists and art educators to substantively augment their practice and earnings. Many school districts provide funding for the M.A degree.
The M.A. degree advances an “area of artistic specialization” for each student, leading to gallery-ready work and the establishment of personalized, artisan-based and potentially marketable commodities. These exciting areas of specialization include drawing, painting, printmaking, jewelry/metals, photography, ceramics, sculpture, and furniture. The program is intended to engage each student in graduate level study characterized by enhanced skills development and conceptual understandings, which culminate in a professional thesis exhibition. Many enrolled students are working artists, teachers and professionals. Although demanding of qualitative work, the program provides enough flexibility for students to take courses at a pace which best accommodates their lifestyles. In certain cases, students have completed the program in two years, however a minimum of three years should be expected as the number of credits taken per semester and rate of progress will vary among individuals. Interviews for admission are held throughout the calendar year, by appointment. Students may begin taking courses in either spring or fall semester. Certification Option *
The Master of Arts in Fine Arts Education: K-12 Teaching Certification Option is a 48 credit, academically intensive program designed for students who have undergraduate preparation and demonstrated competency in the studio arts and wish to secure New Jersey K-12 Teaching Certification in Art. The program’s philosophical approach is rooted in develop-mental psychology and supported by contemporary research in the field. This reading and writing intensive program prepares future educators to engage in conceptual thought and learning in the visual arts and to translate these understanding into an active and vivified classroom practice. To achieve this goal, students continue to develop a strong studio practice that is augmented by an academic study of the psychological origins of artistic expression as they unfold within the growing individual. Admission to the program is by application and interview. All prospective applicants are strongly urged to contact the program coordinator as soon as possible to discuss the course of studies and to ensure a timely placement in required fieldwork.
Admission to the graduate program is competitive and by application and interview. Admission requirements include a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.00, demonstrated accomplishment in studio art, an academic writing sample, evidence of dialogic/communication skills, and completion of Praxis Core and Praxis II Art Content tests. Art Supervision Option
The Master of Arts in Fine Arts Education, Art Supervision Option is is designed for practicing art teachers who seek career advancement through additional certification as district supervisors in New Jersey. The program cultivates supervisors who have the potential to lead art educators towards contemporary, democratic and dimensional forms of education for divergent populations of children and adolescents. Specifically, this reading and writing intensive program seeks to foster art supervisors who are versed in contemporary research, understand the need for alternate methods of instruction, are knowledgeable about assessment, demonstrate strong organizational skills and can serve as advocates for the arts as important facets of education. The program requires future art administrators to engage in coursework, fieldwork, and the writing of a thesis in order to become introspective observers of the dynamics of classrooms, schools, districts, and communities. These developed insights are meant to serve the cultural, ethnic, and intellectually diversified needs of K-12 students and provide leadership through the professional development and supervision of educators.
