Since its inception, Kean University has been a leader in teacher education in New Jersey. Today and every day, Kean graduates are making a real difference in the lives of young people in New Jersey, across the United States and abroad. The College of Education has achieved national recognition as one of the 50 largest producers of teachers in the nation, as well as the largest producer of effective teachers in the State of New Jersey. Since 1955, the College of Education has continued to earn accreditation from the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (Now CAEP - Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation). Notably, only one-third of the schools that produce teachers in the United States and New Jersey earn this accreditation. The College of Education looks for the following qualities in candidates interested in the teaching profession:
- A commitment to children of diverse backgrounds and learning needs.
- Dedication to lifelong learning and reflective growth as a teacher.
- Experience working with children in such areas as camp counseling, tutoring, coaching or volunteering.
Never before has the need for qualified educators been greater. The College of Education offers a wide array of programs through its Schools (School for Communication Disorders and Deafness, School for Curriculum and Teaching and the School for Global Education and Innovation) and Departments (Department of Physical Education, Recreation and Health, and the Department of Special Education and Literacy) at both the undergraduate and graduate levels that lead to New Jersey State certification. We also offer programs leading to advanced certification in Speech, Language & Hearing Sciences, Literacy Studies, Special Education and Counselor Education. While our programs are designed for teachers, counselors, athletic trainers, and speech/language pathologists, they all reflect the beliefs of our faculty that education has the power to transform individuals and society and that respect for diversity and the provision of educational opportunity for all is fundamentally important in a pluralistic, democratic society. All of our programs are built upon the principles and values outlined in the College of Education Spectrum Conceptual Framework. In addition to our academic programs, the College of Education includes: the Teaching Performance Center, the Child Study Institute, the Post-Baccalaureate & Teacher Certification Office, the Office of Alternate Route Programs and the Child Care Center. Our faculty and staff have also received grants to support cutting edge research and teacher training like the Garden State Partnership for Teacher Quality and the New Vistas Project. The College also publishes the Journal of School Connections, an interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed publication founded by Kean University. JSC disseminates empirical quantitative and qualitative studies that provide insight into innovative classroom practices.
