GUIDE SHEETS WITH EFFECTIVE DATE FALL 2009

Students in all majors are required to take the five GE Academic Foundations courses listed below. Some students also take developmental reading and/or math courses (if required because of placement test scores) as part of their foundational coursework.

► GE 1000  Transition to Kean
Note:  Required of all freshmen and transfers with fewer than 10 credits.
Course Description:  In this one-credit course, students learn about university programs and services and develop academic skills to function successfully in a university setting.
Prerequisites:  none 
Minimum Required Grade:  “D”

 

► ENG 1030  College Composition
Notes:  The following equivalent courses also fulfill the ENG 1030 requirement:  ENG 1031/1032 (six-credit, one-semester version of College Composition), ENG 1033/1034 (six-credit, two-semester version of College Composition), and ENG 1430 (ESL course, College Composition for Non-Native Speakers II).  The format of College Composition a student is required to take is determined by placement testing.  (Students exempt from placement testing due to their SAT scores or prior college coursework are required to take ENG 1030 unless they have already received transfer credit for the course.) 
Course Description:  This course covers expository and persuasive writing for academic purposes.  Emphasis is placed on writing as a reflective and social process; writing across the curriculum; critical thinking; and the development of a personal intellectual perspective and style of expression.  
Prerequisites: none  
Minimum Required Grade:  “C” but some majors require a grade higher than “C” as indicated on major guidesheet/program evaluation

 

► MATH 1000 or 1010 or 1016 or 1030 or 1044 or 1054 as specified by major
Notes: The MATH course you will take fulfill your GE Foundations math requirement will be determined by your major.  Your major guidesheet will specify which MATH course you must take or will indicate that you can choose a MATH course from a list of two or more options.

MATH 1000  Algebra for College Students:
Course Description:Topics covered in this course include operations with real numbers, polynomial expressions, exponents, rational and radical expressions; solutions of linear and nonlinear equations and inequalities; solutions of linear and nonlinear systems of equations; and an introduction to functions and their graphs. Prerequisite:  successful completion of MATH 0901 (if required by placement test results).
Minimum Required Grade:  “D” but some majors require a grade higher than “D” in the GE Foundations MATH course as indicated on major guidesheet/program evaluation

MATH 1010  Foundations of Mathematics:
Course Description:  An introduction to mathematical reasoning including problem-solving strategies, sets and set operations, logic, geometry, and statistics.
Prerequisite:  successful completion of MATH 0901 (if required by placement test results).
Minimum Required Grade:  “D” but some majors require a grade higher than “D” in the GE Foundations MATH course as indicated on major guidesheet/program evaluation

MATH 1016  Statistics:
Course Description:  Topics covered in this course include: descriptive and inferential statistics, graphic treatment of data, characteristics of distributions, statistical models, correlation, regression, estimation and hypothesis testing.  Computer applications.
Prerequisite:  successful completion of MATH 0901 (if required by placement test results).

MATH 1030  Problem Solving in Mathematics:
Course Description:  This course focuses on development and application of problem solving strategies to a variety of problems within and outside of mathematics, making connections between mathematics and other content areas, numerous and varied experiences with problem solving as a method of inquiry, and applications.
Prerequisite:  successful completion of MATH 0901 (if required by placement test results).
Minimum Required Grade:  “D” but some majors require a grade higher than “D” in the GE Foundations MATH course as indicated on major guidesheet/program evaluation

MATH 1044  Precalculus for Business:
Course Description:  Topics covered in this course include equations, inequalities, and their applications; functions and graphs, lines, parabolas and systems of equations; exponential and logarithmic functions; compound interest, present value, annuities and amortization of loans; matrix algebra, Gauss-Jordan elimination and applications; inverse of a matrix, solutions of systems of equations and inequalities; and problem solving methods.  Student will be required to acquire a specified graphing calculator.  Cannot be used as a pre-requisite for MATH 2411 (Calculus I).
Prerequisites:  successful completion of MATH 0901 (if required by placement test results) and MATH 1000 or appropriate score on ACCUPLACER College-Level Mathematics test.
Minimum Required Grade:  “D” but some majors require a grade higher than “D” in the GE Foundations MATH course as indicated on major guidesheet/program evaluation

MATH 1054  Precalculus:
Course Description:  Topics covered in this course include exponential and logarithmic functions; trigonometric functions with emphasis on trigonometric identities and trigonometric analysis; complex numbers, polar coordinates, plane vectors and trigonometric forms of complex numbers; arithmetic and geometric sequences and series; and problem solving methods.
Prerequisites:  successful completion of MATH 0901 (if required by placement test results) and MATH 1000 or appropriate score on ACCUPLACER College-Level Mathematics test.
Minimum Required Grade:  “D” but some majors require a grade higher than “D” in the GE Foundations MATH course as indicated on major guidesheet/program evaluation

 

► COMM 1402  Speech Communication As Critical Citizenship
Course Description:  This course addresses understanding and practicing speech communication as a central value of a civil society.  It is this value that provides the frame for producing, presenting, interpreting, and evaluating oral messages in dyadic, small group, and public speaking contexts.
Prerequisites:  successful completion of developmental reading (if required by placement test results) and ENG 1031/1032 or ENG 1033 (if required by placement test results); may be taken concurrently with ENG 1030, ENG 1034 or ENG 1430
Minimum Required Grade:  “D” but some majors require a grade higher than “D” as indicated on major guidesheet/program evaluation

 

► GE 202X  Research and Technology
Notes: There are six different versions of GE 202XResearch and Technology.  The version you will take depends upon your major and will be indicated on your major guidesheet, as follows:
     GE 2021 for College of Business and Public Administration (BPA) majors;
     GE 2022 for College of Education (EDU) majors;
     GE 2023 for College of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) majors;
     GE 2024 for College of Natural, Applied, and Health Sciences (NAHS) majors;
     GE 2025 for College of Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) majors; and
     GE 2026 for Undecided majors.
If you change or declare your major after you have already passed Research and Technology, you do NOT have to take a different version of the course as may be specified by your new major.  Any version of Research and Technology you have already passed will fulfill your requirement.

Course Description:  This course provides an introduction to the research process, including preparing a formal research paper and an oral presentation with an emphasis on the use of computer technology to design, investigate, and report research activities.  Prerequisites: successful completion of developmental reading (if required by placement test results) and College Composition and COMM 1402
