GE Disciplinary/Interdisciplinary Distribution Requirements
(30-32 Credits for B.A. degrees; 19 credits for B.S., B.F.A, and B.I.D. Degrees):

  • When selecting GE Distribution courses, you should always check both your major guide sheet and the list of Approved GE Distribution Courses.
  • All courses taken to fulfill GE Distribution requirements must be on the list of Approved GE Distribution Courses.  Courses that do not appear on this list cannot be used to fulfill GE Distribution requirements.
  • When selecting a course that appears on the list of Approved GE Distribution Courses, you must also check that this course fits somewhere on the guide sheet for your major.
  • Many majors will indicate (on the major guide sheet) specific Distribution courses their students must take.
  • You will take GE Distribution courses in the clusters described in more detail below, i.e., in the Humanities (GEHU), the Social Sciences (GESS), Science/Mathematics (GESM), and (for B.A. degrees only) Health/Physical Education (GEHPE).

  • If you are in a B.A. degree program, you will take three courses (for a total of nine credits) to fulfill your GE Distribution requirements in the Humanities.  If you are in a B.S., B.F.A. or B.I.D. degree program, you will take two courses (for a total of six credits) to fulfill your GE Distribution requirements in the Humanities.
  • All of these courses must be chosen from the GEHU Humanities section of the list of Approved GE Distribution Courses.
  • One of these courses must be ENG 2403, World Literature, a course that is required of all students.  No other English course fulfills this requirement.
  • Check your major guide sheet to determine the other course(s) you should take.  The other course(s) may be specified by your major or you may have options.
  • Unless your major guide sheet specifies otherwise, when three courses are needed to fulfill your GE Distribution requirements in the Humanities, these courses should be from three different areas.
  • The only Interdisciplinary (ID) courses that can be used to fulfill GEHU Humanities requirements are ID 1300 (Introduction to Women’s Studies) and ID 3230 (Understanding Images).
  • GE Humanities credit in the Foreign Language area is awarded only upon successful completion of the second semester of a two-semester sequence at the Elementary (Basic) or Intermediate level.  A student who completes the specified two-semester sequence (for example, SPAN 1101 and SPAN 1102) may use the three credits from the first semester (SPAN 1101) to fulfill a lower-level elective requirement (depending on the major) and the three credits from the second semester (SPAN 1102) to fulfill a GE Humanities requirement in the Foreign Language area (depending on the major).

  • If you are in a B.A. degree program, you will take three courses (for a total of nine credits) to fulfill your GE Distribution requirements in the Social Sciences.  If you are in a B.S., B.F.A. or B.I.D. degree program, you will take two courses (for a total of six credits) to fulfill your GE Distribution requirements in the Social Sciences.
  • All of these courses must be chosen from the GESS Social Sciences section of the list of Approved GE Distribution Courses.
  • One of the three courses must be HIST 1000, History of Civil Society in America, a course that is required of all students.  No other History course fulfills this requirement.
  • Check your major guide sheet to determine the other course(s) you should take.  The other course(s) may be specified by your major or you may have options.
  • Unless your major guide sheet specifies otherwise, when three courses are needed to fulfill your GE Distribution requirements in the Social Sciences, these courses should be from three different areas.
  • The only Interdisciplinary (ID) course that can be used to fulfill a GESS Social Sciences requirement is ID 2415 (Group Communication).

 

Science & Mathematics (GESM)      10-11 Credits (B.A. Degrees)

  • If you are in a B.A. degree program, you will take three courses (for a total of ten to eleven credits) to fulfill your GE Distribution requirements in Science and Mathematics.  If you are in a B.S., B.F.A. or B.I.D. degree program, you will take two courses (for a total of seven credits) to fulfill your GE Distribution requirements in Science and Mathematics.
  • All of these courses must be chosen from the GESM Science & Mathematics section of the list of Approved GE Distribution Courses.
  • One of the courses must be a MATH or CPS course from the list of Approved GE Distribution Courses.  Your major may specify which of these MATH or CPS courses you must take or you may have a choice.
  • Another of the courses must be 4-credit lab science course.  Your major guide sheet may indicate which science course you must take or you may have options.
  • If a third course is required, you will may take a three or four credit science course; this course may be specified by your major or you may have options.
  • Unless your major guide sheet specifies otherwise, when three courses are needed to fulfill your GE Distribution requirements in Science & Mathematics, these courses should be from three different areas.
  • The only Interdisciplinary (ID) course that can be used to fulfill a GESM Science & Math requirement is ID 1400 (Technology and Information Systems in Modern Society).

  • All of these courses must be chosen from the GEHPE Health & Physical Education section of the list of Approved GE Distribution Courses.
  • Your guide sheet may specify that you must take ID 1225 or you may have a choice of taking ID 1225, or ID 1010, or two one-credit PED classes.
  • The guide sheets for Education majors generally require ID 1225 and an additional, specified PED course (for a total of 4 credits).
  • If you are a in a B.S., B.F.A., or B.I.D. degree program, you do not have any GE Health/Physical Education requirements.
