Vision

The vision of Healthy Kean is to ensure a campus atmosphere that promotes and provides opportunities for students to live a healthy lifestyle and enjoy optimal wellness.

Next Steps for the Task Force

The task force was established in late summer and fall of 2017. We have been doing some preliminary analysis of existing options and programs on campus and gathering data about the health of our campus. One of the tools we employed was the American College Health Association's National College Health Assessment II. During Spring 2018 we have been analyzing the data to guide new and existing programing.  This web-page will serve as a resource to communicate findings, promote programs and locate resources.    Healthy Kean initiative are based of the ACHA’s Healthy Campus 2020 objective which can be found at https://www.acha.org/HealthyCampus/Objectives/Student_Objectives/HealthyCampus/Student_Objectives.aspx?hkey=a9f191de-243b-41c6-b913-c012961ecab9.

Finding Balance

Wellness is an active process through which you become aware of, and make choices towards a more balanced life.  Kean Counseling Center (KCC) views students and other members of Kean community as whole and dynamic individuals.  We are sensitive to how the components of our lives impact our health and well-being.  We encourage personal responsibility for achieving and maintaining wellness.  Our approach not only assists in the process of healing, but also provides information and care to maintain and enhance well-being according to individual needs and desires.

KCC also realizes the environments in which we live and work also impact well-being.  This means our efforts to support wellness for the individual must include working to create a health community the supports the well-being of it's members.

Our goal is to optimize wellness, now and for the future.

Food For Fuel

College students can have busy schedule with irregular hours due to many factors including classes, homework, jobs, family responsibilities, social commitment, etc.  Sometime it seems hard to find the time or the opportunity to eat a healthy diet. However, food is the fuel that keeps us going and the right foods make us feel better and have more energy.   There are many food options on campus along with resources to help you make healthy choices. Check out some of these resources and the people who you can talk to if you have questions about nutrition.

Be Active

The benefits of regular exercise are numerous and you don’t have to spend hours at the gym to improve your overall health.  Most adults over age 18 should get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity each week.  That works out to be 30 minutes 5 days a week, however you can even break it down into smaller 10 minute intervals.  Health benefits include weight management, reduced risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease, strengthens bones and muscles, improves mental health and mood, improves sleep and energy.  There are many activities that you can do on campus, start by taking a brisk walk along the beautiful Cougar Walk.  Check out Fit to Be Kean and Kean Intramurals and Recreation Services for more offerings.
