The Master of Science in Computer Information Systems is designed to give students the analytic and technical skills necessary to solve problems using computer information systems. Students learn to design, build and maintain complex systems utilizing current and evolving technologies. The applied nature of the computer information systems program gives students the implementation experience and confidence to play a leadership role in developing future systems for business, gaming, government, and industry. Students also have the opportunity to work with faculty on individual projects and research.
B.S. Clinical Laboratory Science: Medical Laboratory Science (with Rutgers University)
Medical Laboratory Scientists are clinical laboratory professionals and members of the health care team who participates in diagnosis of disease through the use of sophisticated instruments and techniques. Medical Laboratory Scientists are needed to fill positions in hospitals, clinics and research laboratories. Kean University recognizes the need for qualified medical laboratory scientists in the region’s workforce, as well as a desire among its student population to pursue such careers. The University also recognizes that duplication of certain health education programs is costly and unnecessary. Thus, a joint degree with Rutgers University School of Health Professions (SHP) would be cost effective for both universities and such a joint program is mutually beneficial to Kean University, its students, and Rutgers. Students in the program complete three years of coursework (General Education and required Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology courses) at Kean and one year of clinical courses and hospital clinical experience at Rutgers. After successful completion of the program students receive a joint degree and are eligible to take the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) exam for certification.

This is a joint program between Kean University and Rutgers University. General education courses will be completed at Kean and Health Information Management courses will be completed at Rutgers.
The health information manager is a member of the healthcare team and is the professional responsible for management of health information systems consistent with medical, administrative, ethical and legal requirements. Health Information professionals collect, analyze and utilize data to provide information critical to the health care industry. A Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) collects many kinds of data from a variety of sources, monitors the integrity of the information, ensures appropriate access to health records and manages the analysis and use of this data. This professional is an essential connection between physicians, patients, payers and others in the healthcare industry.
Health information professionals are often employed as department managers in hospital centers. Major areas of responsibility in this setting include: determining health information policies; planning; budgeting; acting as a liaison with other departments; evaluating employee performance; educating departmental staff, medical staff and ancillary departments to assure quality information; and serving on important committees such as quality management and utilization review.
With the advancing of technology and the transition to the electronic health record, RHIAs are finding expanding opportunities for employment in a wide variety of organizations, including Health Maintenance Organizations, insurance companies, law firms, physician offices, consulting firms, software companies and the pharmaceutical industry.
Health information opportunities involve planning for and implementing computerized patient record systems, as well as playing a vital role in maintaining the privacy and security of health information stored in multiple formats. Professionals with technical expertise, problem solving skills, knowledge of clinical medicine and superior communication skills are needed to develop new policies and procedures in health care documentation and protecting patient confidentiality.

B.A. Biology / M.S. Physician Assistant (with Rutgers University)

This Dual Degree Program is a collaborative effort between Kean University and Rutgers University.
The program combines a Bachelor’s degree in Biology and a Master of Science degree in Physician Assistant. The program consists of undergraduate studies at Kean for the BA in Biology degree and graduate studies at Rutgers leading to a Master in Physician Assistant degree. The Dual Degree program is available to students who do not already have a Bachelor’s degree.
Students are admitted into the BA in Biology major/ PA track (minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 required). Students apply to the PA Program by June 1 of their sophomore (44-66 credits accumulated by spring semester) year at Kean, and if accepted, must maintain a 3.00 GPA (on a scale of 4.0, where 4.0 =”A”) through the end of their third undergraduate year. Students apply for admission to Rutgers through the Central Application Service for Physician Assistants (CASPA). Personal interviews will be required of all applicants considered. The interview will serve to determine the applicant’s emotional and intellectual maturity, ability to communicate, and potential to achieve career satisfaction within the Physician Assistant role. Admission to the Biology major/PA track does not guarantee admission into the PA Program at Rutgers.
If accepted into the Physician Assistant Program, courses taken during the first year at Rutgers will transfer to Kean to complete the undergraduate degree in Biology at Kean University. At the end of the first year of the PA Program, Kean will confer the BA degree in Biological Sciences; at the end of the two additional years at Rutgers (or the sixth year) Rutgers will confer the MS in Physician Assistant.
