The bachelor’s degree program prepares its graduates for entrance into a Master of Arts degree in Speech-Language Pathology (such as the M.A. program at Kean University) or a doctoral program in audiology.
Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) evaluate, diagnose and treat individuals with speech, language, communication, hearing and swallowing problems. They work with individuals of all ages who have difficulty in communicating and (SLPs) find employment in a myriad of settings, including public, private or special schools, hospitals, the private industry, rehabilitation centers, universities, medical offices and in private practices.
It is certainly true now that there is a shortage of certified speech-language pathologists, a trend predicted to be the case in the foreseeable future. This field combines science and art and requires that one has patience, a sincere interest in helping people, an above-average intellectual aptitude and the sensitivity, personal warmth, creativity and perspective to interact with the person who has a communication problem. It is a varied and challenging career path.
Audiologists evaluate, diagnose and treat individuals with hearing problems. Many are involved with hearing aids, counseling and cochlear implant technology. With expertise in using sophisticated instrumentation, audiologists can dramatically help individuals of all ages whose hearing is compromised for a wide variety of reasons. This challenging and technical field has, as its entry level credential, a doctoral degree (the Aud.D.).
The prescribed course of study in the undergraduate Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences program can also provide a solid foundation for related professions, such as teaching in special education, deaf education, elementary or secondary education. In addition, the bachelor’s program also sets the stage for graduate work in psychology, social work and some health oriented careers.
Speech Language Pathology for Pre-Professional
B.A. Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences
The Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences program in the School of Communication Disorders and Deafness provides foundational pre-professional preparation for entrance into a graduate program in speech-language pathology or audiology.
The program has been designed to provide students with a cohesive course sequence in the areas of basic science, social and behavioral sciences, general education, humanities and communication sciences and disorders. The course work in mathematics, psychology, linguistics and basic sciences will provide students with a strong background beneficial for pursuing careers in speech-language pathology, audiology, psychology, social work, general or special education, and allied health.
Masters of Arts program: Speech-Language Pathology
Program Description
This advanced study program is designed to prepare students for professional positions as Speech-Language Pathologists in educational and healthcare settings. They will be able to identify, assess and enhance the communicative skills of individuals with a variety of communication disorders in a variety of settings. These disorders include articulation, language, voice, fluency, cognition and swallowing. The program is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and meets the academic and practicum requirements of the New Jersey Licensing Board in Speech-Language Pathology/Audiologisy as well as Speech-Language Specialist certification issued by the New Jersey Department of Education.
Students holding degrees in disciplines other than Speech Pathology may apply to the program and, if admitted, will be required to successfully complete prescribed undergraduate coursework before becoming fully matriculated in the Master’s Program: Communication Disorders; Phonetics; Anatomy & Physiology of the Ear & Speech Mechanism; Language Development; Audiology; Speech and Hearing Science, and Neuroscience.

Pre-Professional Speech-Language Pathology Program
Program Description
The Speech-Language Pathology Pre-Professional Program is housed in the School of Communication Disorders and Deafness. The purpose of the program is to provide foundational preparation for students who have an academic and/or professional background in a field other than speech-language-hearing sciences and disorders who intend to apply for entrance into a graduate program in speech-language pathology or audiology.
