Criminal Justice Mission and Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
B.A. in Criminal Justice Mission
The mission of the Department of Criminal Justice is to prepare students as criminal justice academics and professionals who will contribute to the community, profession and discipline through critical thinking, research and participation in the criminal justice (CJ) system or academia. Students in the program will develop a broad understanding of the criminal justice system including the correctional, courts, and juvenile justice systems; the application and substantive nature of the law, corrections, and policing.
B.A. in Criminal Justice Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
Students who graduate with a B.A. in Criminal Justice should be able to:
SLO1: Students will be able to identify the main components of the criminal justice system, and summarize the salient issues related to each component.
SLO2: Students will understand the main principles of the United States Constitution, specifically related to individual rights and due process.
SLO3: Students will understand key theories that explain why people commit crimes and how offenders can be deterred.
SLO4: Students will become good consumers of research on a CJ-related topic of interest to them.
SLO5: Students will communicate effectively.
KU Student Outcomes (KU): Kean University graduates should be able to:
1. Think critically, creatively and globally;
2. Adapt to changing social, economic, and technological environments;
3. Serve as active and contributing members of their communities; and
4. Advance their knowledge in the traditional disciplines (GE) and enhance their skills in professional areas.

Mission
The Master of Arts in Criminal Justice Program at Kean University has several related goals that are aligned with the mission of the Department of Criminal Justice. The mission of the Department of Criminal Justice is to prepare students as criminal justice academics and professionals who will contribute to the community, profession and discipline through critical thinking, research and participation in the criminal justice system or academia. The Master of Arts program adds depth to the students existing knowledge and provides students with the tools necessary to strengthen their analytical skills and theoretical understanding of the varied and diverse areas within the criminal justice student with the expectation of students contributing to the advancement of knowledge within the academy.
Master of Arts in Criminal Justice
PROGRAM STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Students who graduate with a MA in Criminal Justice are expected to:
SLO1: Students will design and conduct an original research study, with a clearly stated research question or hypothesis, on a topic related to the study of CJ.
SLO2: Students will demonstrate a mastery of published literature on a topic related to the study of CJ.
SLO3: Students will select and execute an appropriate research methodology related to their original research study (SLO1).
SLO4: Students will communicate effectively.
