SCREENING

Kean Counseling Center is available to provide a one-on-one individual screening. This is a consultation and personalized recommendations are provided to the student.

INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING

Kean University students who are interested in individual counseling in the area of alcohol and other drug concerns are offered sessions through the Counseling Center. Counseling takes a brief motivational approach designed to increase a student’s reflective state concerning their alcohol and/or drug use.  The approach emphasizes choices and personal responsibility. Counseling includes a once a week session and can be supplemented by outside support groups.

EARLY INTERVENTION AND EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS

Some students make high risk choices around alcohol and other drugs and may require intervention and educational programs. The programs are designed to meet the individual needs of students who have violated Kean University’s alcohol and other drug policies. These students can be referred by various offices at Kean University. They include the Office of Community Standards and Student Conduct, the Office of Residential Student Services, the Department of Athletics and Recreation, and the Center for Leadership and Service. Additionally, students may refer themselves to our services.  The educational programs are designed to meet individual needs of students who have made high risk choices around substances. The components of the early intervention and educational programs are as follows:

  1. Choices I: is a specialized program for students who are found in violation of Residential Student Services or University alcohol policy. The program involves an individual substance screening and participation in two (2) psycho-educational groups. This is a brief alcohol abuse prevention and harm reduction program involving interactive journaling.  Students are presented with information and then are able to reflect on what they have learned as it relates to their choices about drinking in their personal journals. The program is presented in a non-confrontational manner that allows students to make their own choices about alcohol consumption.
  2. Choices II: is a specialized program for students who are found to be in violation of Residential Student Services or University alcohol policy for a second time. The requirements are an individual substance screening and participation in three (3) psych- educational groups. The program follows the Choices I format.
  3. Alternatives: is a specialized program for students who are found in violation of the Residential Student Services or University other drug policy.  The requirements of the program are an individual substance screening and participation in a five (5) week psycho-educational group. This is a brief drug abuse prevention program involving interactive journaling.  Students are presented with information and then are able to reflect on what they have learned as it relates to their choices. Students are also required to complete the e-toke assessment.

If students are assessed for any of the above programs and their substance use requires a higher level of  treatment than the Counseling Center can provide, students are given a referral to an outside treatment facility where they can also fulfill their mandate.
