Conference Goals

The goals for the Student Group Leadership Conference are:

To provide newly elected student leaders with a common comprehensive foundation of leadership training;
To provide an opportunity for student leaders to engage with other student leaders, staff and faculty in a cohesive learning environment;
To provide an opportunity for student leaders to learn critical skills as leaders and advocates for their organizations;
To give student leaders the tools to build, strong, responsible, goal-focused organizations;
To show leaders how to lead an organization with insight, effectiveness and integrity.

The ultimate goal of the Student Group Leadership Conference is to provide student group leaders with the knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully lead and strengthen both their organizations and memberships for the betterment of the Kean University student community.

Keynote Speaker

Alex Taylor

Alex is Innova's Marketing Strategist. After serving Sigma Nu Fraternity HQ for 5 years and recruiting over 500 men, he brought his fraternal growth and marketing expertise to Innova. He builds marketing plans, teaches sophisticated marketing techniques, and changes lives daily.

Conference Registration

Registration for the 2018 Student Group Leadership Conference on Wednesday, June 6, 2018 is now open! The conference is required for all presidents, vice presidents, treasurers, secretaries, public relations directors and new member educators of all non-funded, funded, governmental and Greek letter organizations. Student group leaders were only required to attend one day of the conference (or the equivalent number of student group workshops throughout multiple days).

Student Group Training Requirement

To fulfill the 2018-2019 student group training requirement, each student group executive board member must obtain seven (7) workshop credits with the following breakdown:

3 Organizational Development Workshop Credits
2 Group Fundamentals Workshop Credits
1 Leader Development Workshop Credit
1 Elective Workshop Credit (Any Workshop Category)

Group Fundamentals

Group fundamental workshops are designed to provide essential and technical information related to running a recognized Kean University student group or organization or hosting a student group activity or event.

Organizational Development

Organizational development workshops are designed to develop and enhance the functioning of the student group as a team or their events, activities and programs.

Leader Development

Leader development workshops are designed to develop and enhance a student’s leadership abilities or promote personal wellness.

Professional Development

Professional development workshops are designed to provide the student leader with information that will help the student articulate the experiences gained through their various student leadership roles or help develop the leader’s skills and abilities for the professional/career world.

Elective Workshop

Fulfillment of this item is met when a student attends any group fundamentals, professional development, leader development, or organizational development workshop outside of the workshop category requirements.

Educational Workshops Session 1

Being Presidential
11:20 a.m. to 12 noon | North Avenue Academic Building (NAAB) Auditorium
The president is the highest ranking executive board member in an organization and is one of the most honored roles to obtain. This workshop will provide student group presidents with the insight on how to manage a group from the top of command downward. Discussions will cover the integration of ideas and leadership types to fit a common vision, conflict resolution, and adherence to Robert’s Rule of Order for operational practices.

Stepping Up in Absence of Executive Board Members
11:20 a.m. to 12 noon | North Avenue Academic Building (NAAB), room 109
Vice Presidents serve an important role within any organization, but that role can vary from organization to organization. In general, Vice Presidents are responsible for committee assignments and keeping the membership engaged in the governance of the organization. This workshop will focus on ways to identify and tap into the strengths and talents of the general membership so that they too can play a role within your organization. Being a Vice President also requires being able to assume the duties and responsibilities of the President at any given time, but until that time, the Vice President assists the President in the management of the organization.

Maintaining Your Organization’s Records Through Cougar Link

As secretary you are the keeper of your organization’s records. These records include correspondence, agendas, and minutes. The Secretary is also responsible for maintaining the student group structure and purpose statement, which is your organization’s most important document. Any document produced by the organization’s Secretary and approved by the membership is considered a legal document and thus must be as accurate as possible. In addition, as Secretary you are responsible for member relations and notifications. This workshop will explain the importance of accurate documentation in minutes, agendas and attendance so that your organization is organized and your information is effective.

Managing Your Organization’s Finances and Banking

As the treasurer of your organization you are responsible for your organization’s finances. Each organization is different and the budgets may vary, but one thing will always remain constant: you are spending someone else’s money! This workshop is designed to provide an overview to your role as a treasurer and focuses on accountability, transparency and organization. In addition, several key avenues for funding will be discussed including fundraising, joint programming and other information regarding funding.

"Public relations is a strategic communication process that builds mutually beneficial relationships between organizations and their public." Marketing your organization is more than just hanging up flyers on bulletin boards on campus and posting information on the wall of social networking sites. This workshop is designed to explain the importance of an overall marketing plan and strategy for your organization. How do you want your organization to be seen? What is the message you want to project? It is all up to you. Learn how to market and publicize your organization, events and, most importantly, your mission utilizing the Kean University resources at your disposal. As a funded group treasurer, you are given a lot of repsosiblites and one of those is being able to budget and determine where your money is going as a organization. The biggest thing to learn when it comes to this aspect of running an orgainzation is budgeting. Being a student leader comes with a vast amount of responsibility. In addition to managing your organization, you must also learn how to manage and balance your personal life. Life is not always as easy as we would like it to be and there comes a time to ask yourself how ‘you’ are doing. Many factors can lead to stress in both your life and in your organization. Student leaders must learn to manage their stress instead of letting their stress manage them. This workshop is designed to help you manage ‘you’ and will teach you to identify stress indicators and techniques to manage your stress.

Where are you keeping your organization’s money? If your organization has money, how are you ensuring you have a fair, accurate and transparent record of your finances? Any organization that has its own finances is strongly encouraged to establish an official organizational bank account. This workshop is designed to teach your organization to have a transparent financial system and use your organization’s bank account effectively to write checks and make deposits.

It will explain the importance of why they should each have a social media accountant for their group and proper ways to use it. Tips and advice on how to improve their social media practices will be explained as well. The presentation will offer the groups extremely useful information that they can use to grow themselves and increase involvement.

It is important to focus on the concept that what you do, say, post, etc. has a personal and group consequence (whether-positive or negative).This presentation will also assess the many ways a group can and should be ethical- abiding by their core principles and values to ultimately foster a socially responsible environment. This presentation aims to uncover the many ways an organization can be more socially responsible through their personal and collective image, the behavior and practices of the organization itself, and the outreach and events orchestrated by these organizations.

Walk, Talk, and Act Like a Leader

"If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader." Being a leader requires more than just hard work. Effective leadership is not about making speeches or being liked; leadership is defined by results and not attributes. A leader takes a little more than one's share of the blame, and a little less than one's share of the credit. This workshop is designed to allow student leaders to reflect on their appearance, conduct verbal and non-verbal communication at meetings, events, and in their everyday lives. It's easy to call yourself a leader but are you willing to sacrifice, work hard, and be committed so that you can walk the walk, talk the talk, and look the part.
