FEDERAL WORK STUDY COMMUNITY SERVICE PROGRAM

The Center for Leadership and Service coordinates the Federal Work Study (FWS) Community Service program for Kean University in partnership with the Office of Financial Aid. Students that are eligible for Federal Work Study and have a passion to serve may be eligible for placement at one of Kean University's community partner agencies.

What is Federal Work-Study?

The FWS program provides part-time employment to students with financial need (as determined by the FAFSA).  Their earnings are intended to help meet their costs of education.  The program encourages students receiving FWS assistance to participate in community service activities and work related to their field of study.  Students are paid on an hourly basis and can work up to 20 hours per week. The program is available to both graduate and undergraduate students. Work-Study applications are available at the Office of Financial Aid.

What are the benefits?

Personal
Participating in the Federal Work-Study (FWS) Community Service program provides students with the opportunity to gain tangible employment experience with reputable community agencies while earning money to aid in the cost of tuition. Through developing and expanding upon skills such as communication, leadership, networking, and time management, participants of the FWS Community Service program increase their marketability for future internship and job opportunities.

Community
This program is intended to immerse Kean University students into the local community in an attempt to provide additional support to community agencies that work to alleviate various issues including but not limited to:

  • Child Care
  • Education
  • Homelessness
  • Literacy
  • Poverty
  • Sustainability

Through successful FWS Community Service partnerships we are able to strengthen the relationship between Kean University and the surrounding communities. This program is designed to provide opportunities for students to step outside of the “university bubble” and affect positive change in the communities we share.
