Alternative Spring Break

The Alternative Spring Break project is an opportunity for volunteers to actively participate in community service projects of various forms.  It is an opportunity to share a meaningful experience with Kean University students as well as contemplate the role of volunteerism in today's society.  Volunteers will be visiting one or more work sites to assist rebuilds of homes as well as other volunteer projects. There will be a wide array of tasks, including but not limited to, debris removal, digging ditches, painting, flooring, sheet rock removal/installation or general labor tasks and operations.

Dates: Sunday, March 5, 2017 through Thursday, March 9, 2017

  • Departure Time: 4 p.m. Sunday, March 5, 2017, from Kean University
  • Return Time: 12 noon Thursday, March 9, 2017

Service Trip Cost: $50.00 - If you are selected to participate, you must submit payment by cash, check or money order to the Center for Leadership and Service within 7 days of acceptance into the program.

Service Location: New Jersey - Ocean and/or Atlantic County Area

Lodging Location: Area Hotel (More details to follow) 

Volunteers will be provided with transportation, lodging and food for the duration of the 4 night service experience.

Volunteer Activities: Students will be transported from the hotel to service sites in predetermined areas in New Jersey. The volunteer opportunities are physical in nature and may require heavy lifting and general labor.

Orientation Meeting: There will be a mandatory orientation meeting scheduled for Wednesday, February 22, 2017, at 3:30 p.m. in Miron Student Center, room 315 to serve as a Meet-and-Greet as well as a program overview for the Alternate Spring Break program.  If you are unable to attend the orientation meeting, you may forfeit your space on the trip. Therefore, please reach out to the Center for Leadership and Service immediately if there is a schedule conflict. 

Please note that participation in the Alternative Spring Break program requires utilizing Kean University provided transportation, lodging and remaining with the Kean University Alternative Spring Break group at all times. Participants are required to follow all safety instructions and guidelines. The Kean University Student Code of Conduct is in effect and applicable to the actions and behaviors of all students that participate.

Application Process

APPLICATION DUE DATE: ​Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.  New applications will NOT be reviewed after 5 p.m. FEBRUARY 20, 2017.
