Eligibility:
- Benefits for Chapter 1606 are for those who are actively drilling with a 6-year obligation to serve in the Selected Reserves.
- Completion of initial active duty is required, and the person must have enlisted after June 30, 1985.
Benefit Payments for Chapter 1606
- A monthly stipend based on rate of pursuit (full-time, ¾ time, ½ time, less than ½ time) will be provided for a 36 month period without extensions.
- An additional amount, or “kicker”, can be added to the benefits. Amounts of up to $100, $200, and $350 can be added to the benefits.
- A kicker will not extend length of entitlement.

Length of Chapter 1606 Eligibility
- The entitlement to receive benefits under Chapter 1606 will last until the individual leaves the Selected Reserve.
- The time period may extend due to an initial disability or an increased disability in service that prevents completion of the program.
- A kicker will not extend length of entitlement.
How to Get Certified for Chapter 1606
We will require the following documents:
- VA Form 22-1990 (if student has never used/applied for benefit before)
- VA Form 22-1995 (if student has used benefit before, transferring from another institution)
- DD Form 2384-1 NOBE (Notice of Basic Eligibility)
Please notice the following information:
- Students must apply for VA benefits. As soon as you receive your approval, submit all required documents to the Kean University Office of Veteran’s Services on the second floor of the CAS building room 208.
- Every semester, you must visit the VA office for in-person enrollment.
