Concentration Courses

GE Concentration is required only on guide sheets with effective dates 2002 through 2008.

* * * Not required for student with a second major, minor or collateral program unless Concentration is encumbered by the Major Program(s)

GE Concentration Requirement (print friendly)

A Concentration outside the major is a requirement for all students, with the following two exceptions:

• students with double majors where neither major encumbers the Concentration, i.e., where neither major requires completion of specific Concentration courses
• students taking minors or collateral programs whose majors do not encumber the Concentration, i.e., require completion of specific Concentration courses

The Concentration is:

• a two-course sequence (6-8 credits)
• in the Liberal Arts and Sciences (*see listing of approved disciplines below)
• outside the major
• that builds upon an introductory GE Distribution course
• and may require GE Office pre-approval (see below)

Some majors will specify (on the major guide sheet) which Concentration courses their students must take.  If your major specifies the Concentration courses you must take, you do not need GE Office approval before you take the courses.  If your major does NOT specify the Concentration courses you must take, you may satisfy the GE Concentration requirement in one of the following ways:

…by taking a pre-approved pair of courses at the 1000-level or above that is published in the Registration Bulletin under GECP courses (see list on next page).
This option does NOT require GE Office approval.

…by taking two courses in the same discipline at the 2000 level or above that build upon an introductory GE Distribution course already taken in that discipline.  For example, you might take two 2000-level or above Psychology courses to fulfill your Concentration requirement after having taken the introductory-level GEDistribution course PSY 1000.  (For more examples, see the suggested Concentrations listed on the following pages.)  When selecting Concentration courses, check individual course listings for any additional pre-requisite comments. 
This option DOES require GE Office approval (go to GE Office in CAS-201).

…by taking two courses in the same discipline at the 2000 level or above that build upon an introductory GE Distribution course already taken in a different but related discipline.  For example, you might take two 2000-level Political Science courses in American government and/or American politics to fulfill your Concentration requirement after having taken the introductory American history course HIST 1000 to fulfill a GE Distribution requirement.  When selecting Concentration courses, check individual course listings for any additional pre-requisite comments.
This option DOES require GE Office approval (go to GE Office in CAS-201).

…by taking two courses from different disciplines at the 2000 level or above that cover a similar topic or theme and that build upon a related introductory-level GEDistribution course already taken.  For example, you might build upon a Distribution course in which women’s issues were studied by taking two courses with a women’s studies theme as a Concentration, such as PHIL 2301 Feminist Philosophies and PSY 3340 Psychology of Women.  When selecting Concentration courses, check individual course listings for any additional pre-requisite comments.
This option DOES require GE Office approval (go to GE Office in CAS-201).

*All courses taken to fulfill GE Concentration requirements must be from disciplines represented on the list of Approved GE Distribution courses in the Humanities (GEHU), Social Sciences (GESS) and Science & Math (GESM) areas but NOT the Health & Physical Education (GEHPE) area; i.e., they must be from the following disciplines:  AH, ANTH, ASTR, BIO, CHEM, CPS, ECO, ENG, ES, FA, FREN, GEOG, GEOL, GERM, HEBR, HIST, ITAL, MATH, METR, MUS, PHIL, PHYS, PORT, PS, PSY, REL, SOC, SPAN, and THE.  In addition, students who have taken the GE Distribution course, ID 2415 (Group Communication), may select a COMM concentration pair from the list of options on the following page.
