Students in all majors are required to take the five GE Academic Foundations courses listed below. Some students also take developmental reading courses (if required because of placement test scores) as part of their foundational coursework.

Note: Required of all freshmen and transfers with fewer than 10 credits.
Course Description: In this one-credit course, students learn about university programs and services and develop academic skills to function successfully in a university setting.

► ENG 1030 College Composition
Notes: The following equivalent courses also fulfill the ENG 1030 requirement: ENG 1031/1032 (six-credit, one-semester version of College Composition), ENG 1033/1034 (six-credit, two-semester version of College Composition), and ENG 1430 (ESL course, College Composition for Non-Native Speakers II). The format of College Composition a student is required to take is determined by placement testing. (Students exempt from placement testing due to their SAT scores or prior college coursework are required to take ENG 1030 unless they have already received transfer credit for the course.)
Course Description: This course covers expository and persuasive writing for academic purposes. Emphasis is placed on writing as a reflective and social process; writing across the curriculum; critical thinking; and the development of a personal intellectual perspective and style of expression.

► MATH 1000 Algebra for College Students
Notes: The following equivalent courses also fulfill the MATH 1000 requirement: MATH 1001/1002 (six-credit, one-semester version of Algebra for College Students), MATH 1003/1004 (six-credit, two-semester version of Algebra for College Students), and MATH 1051 (old course number for discontinued course, College Algebra). The format of Algebra for College Students a student is required to take is determined by placement testing. (Students exempt from placement testing due to their SAT scores or prior college coursework are required to take MATH 1000 unless they have already received transfer credit for the course.)
Course Description:Topics covered in this course include operations with real numbers, polynomial expressions, exponents, rational and radical expressions; solutions of linear and nonlinear equations and inequalities; solutions of linear and nonlinear systems of equations; and an introduction to functions and their graphs. Prerequisites: none (format determined by placement testing)

► COMM 1402 Speech Communication As Critical Citizenship
Course Description: This course addresses understanding and practicing speech communication as a central value of a civil society. It is this value that provides the frame for producing, presenting, interpreting, and evaluating oral messages in dyadic, small group, and public speaking contexts.
Prerequisites: successful completion of developmental reading (if required by placement test results) and ENG 1031/1032 or ENG 1033 (if required by placement test results); may be taken concurrently with ENG 1030, ENG 1034 or ENG 1430

► GE 202X Research and Technology
Notes: There are six different versions of GE 202X, Research and Technology. The version you will take depends upon your major and will be indicated on your major guidesheet, as follows:
- GE 2021 for College of Business and Public Administration (BPA) majors;
- GE 2022 for College of Education (EDU) majors;
- GE 2023 for College of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) majors;
- GE 2024 for College of Natural, Applied, and Health Sciences (NAHS) majors;
- GE 2025 for College of Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) majors; and
- GE 2026 for Undecided majors.
If you change or declare your major after you have already passed Research and Technology, you do NOT have to take a different version of the course as may be specified by your new major. Any version of Research and Technology you have already passed will fulfill your requirement.
Course Description: This course provides an introduction to the research process, including preparing a formal research paper and an oral presentation with an emphasis on the use of computer technology to design, investigate, and report research activities. Prerequisites: successful completion of developmental reading (if required by placement test results) and College Composition and COMM 1402
